Sargent Course
In this 6-day course you will be provided with a photographic reproduction of a John Singer Sargent painting. This will not be an ordinary photograph of a painting, but an actual-size, high resolution, color-matched glossy print. I have gone to great lengths to ensure that the photographs closely matches the original painting in values, colors, and contrast.
There is no better way to force yourself to paint with a strong yet loose stroke than to copy an artist like Sargent. I speak from experience. When I had only been painting for about a year, I was given the opportunity to copy a Sargent painting in person at a museum. It completely changed the way that I painted, and I went from painting everything with small detail brushes, to painting with a much more confident stroke. Indeed, Sargent himself did numerous copies of master’s work, especially the work of Diego Velázquez.
Your objective will not be to copy Sargent stroke for stroke, but rather to copy his strong brush work while retaining good color and value from beginning to end. You may choose one of these two Sargent paintings to copy:
The most important lesson you will learn is how to paint with a strong stroke, while protecting you colors and values throughout the process.
The total cost of the course is $3,500 (USD), which includes all the art supplies you will be using. You will be the only student in my studio for the duration of the course.
