- How to Paint Realism
Drawing, color mixing, and painting are all covered in great detail in this 4.5-hour video series. I use this video in my online course and it's the one you should watch if you really want to learn my method.
Click here to watch a preview or purchase the video series. After you purchase the video series, you can watch it online as many times you like, or you can download it to your computer for offline viewing.
- Landscape: From Start to Finish
My approach to painting landscapes is a bit different than my approach to painting portraits and still lifes. In this 4-hour downloadable video series I paint a landscape from multiple photos I took on the Big Island of Hawaii. I cover the whole process with detailed commentary on what I'm doing throughout the entire video.

- Painting Portraits
I filmed this video series on painting a portrait from a photograph in 2010. Drawing, color mixing, and painting the portrait are all covered in great detail.

- 8-Day Workshops in Austin — $1,000
- All the supplies you need are provided in the workshops. You do not need to bring anything with you except the desire to learn. There are three different workshops to choose from:
- Still-Life Workshop
A great way to learn all the fundamental rules of drawing, color mixing, and painting. By the end of the class, you will know how to draw in proportion accurately, how to mix realistic colors, and how to paint while protecting your colors and values. This workshop is all about learning good painting habits and unlearning bad ones.
- Portrait Workshop
In this workshop you will learn to properly light and photograph a live model and make accurate-to-life, quality prints. You will then learn to: draw the head with an emphasis on achieving a good likeness; mix natural, true-to-life flesh tones; not destroy good color and value as you paint; and use many of the techniques that I learned during my 27 years of painting portraits.
- John Singer Sargent Workshop
There is no better way to force yourself to paint with a strong, yet loose stroke, than to copy an artist like Sargent. I speak from experience. The object of this class is not for students to copy Sargent stroke for stroke, but rather to copy his strong brush work while retaining good color and value from beginning to end. Along with the Still-Life Workshop, this workshop is excellent for beginners.

- 8 Days of Private 8-hour Instruction in Austin — $3,000
- The lessons will take place in my studio in Austin, Texas and will be completely private — you will be the only student in my studio for the entire 8-day course, and you will be provided with all the supplies you need. The lessons will be tailored to suit your personal skill level and will address any specific needs you have. You may choose from one of the following course options:
- Set up and paint a still-life from life.
A shadow box and a selection of items to use for your composition will be provided.
- Paint a still-life or a portrait from life-size photographs which I will provide.
To view the selection of still-lifes and portraits photographs, click here.
- Paint from your own photograph.
Please note that I will need to verify that it is of sufficient quality for you to work from.
- Paint a copy of a John Singer Sargent painting.
I will provide you with actual-size prints of the original painting you choose. I have gone to great lengths to ensure that the photographs closely match the original paintings in value, color, and contrast. You can choose between ‘The Fountain’ (click here to preview) or Sargent's portrait of James Whitcomb Riley (click here to preview).
If you have any questions about the private lessons or wish to check on availability, please send an email to mark@drawmixpaint.com for more information.
