Portrait Workshop

In this 8-day class students will paint a head-and-shoulders portrait from beginning to end. Whether you have many years of experience or no experience painting at all, I will teach you how to paint portraits well.

First, students will learn to properly light and photograph a live model using one of our cameras. I will also teach you how to make accurate-to-life, quality prints which you will then work from.

You will then learn to: draw the head with an emphasis on achieving a good likeness; mix natural, true-to-life flesh tones; not destroy good color and value as you paint; and use many of the techniques that I learned during my 27 years of painting portraits.

Everyone will be expected to follow the course “to the letter”. And everyone who does so will succeed. Nothing I will teach students in this class requires any “natural talent”. Although the class will be strict and rigid, I feel it is the best way to learn the fundamentals of great portraiture.
